I for one am glad that I put all my 0.3.8 work on different branches aptly named 0.3.8-RC1/models-n-shit and 0.3.8-RC4/redirect-downloads.

Well, I have two main points and I'd love to hear some answers from somebody on the first one.

Compatibility issues. Will players with the 0.3.7-DL client still be able to play on vanilla 0.3.7 servers? Backwards compatibility is essential as smaller servers will 100% be hurt by splitting the community. If it's not backwards compatible it poses a huge issue in that regard. I'd rather no DL version than splitting the community up like that.

Other is the reasoning, I would have accepted any reason, even saying too much work and being lazy, I would have been a-okay even if it would have been silly. But lack of interest? Is it the lack of initiative from developers to help with testing or what is the reason for declaring that most servers don't want this feature? I am without a shadow of doubt positive that most servers would instantly use these features - everyone from Freeroam to RP to some niche servers benefit from these features and it's not like them existing hurt the developers. The point I'm trying to make is that I think your environment and the developers that surround you may have had more influence on this decision. I know that developers here (non-English, servers of all sizes - from very few players, to hundreds) were eager to implement the new features, everyone was hyped. The reason they weren't vocal is because this forum is mostly English and that is not their target audience and they don't really have anything to participate in the community with.


A shame but as long as there aren't any client compatibility issues, it will be fine and everyone will be waiting on your new releases, Kalcor and Beta Testers.
Good luck and try not to linger too much on the hate that will probably be expressed here in the following days.

It'd be a damned shame if 0.3.7-DL players couldn't connect to 0.3.7-R2 servers.

Shitty engines like BYOND maintain backwards and even forwards compatibility, 510 players can connect to 511 servers.

I never called anyone a failure... I suggest you read what I typed out properly, before simply going off thinking you read what you want to read.

The failure here is that people are basing their servers on a RELEASE CANDIDATE that can, and has, been pulled from production, expecting it to be carried through with.

The next failure is the one to understand that these features are being added in at a later date.

The attacks are you coming in and calling names, simply basing 30% of your post on cursewords and insults rather than actually trying to even understand the posts concerned.

That's entirely your own problem, after all, we used to use Windows RCs, and many of those got turfed, but we didn't see this sort of bullshit reaction from general users on the MS forums.

I wouldn't think that wouldn't be an option... After all, we did have a time where the versions people use are out of sync, but still work, so this could easily be a good idea for Kalcor to actually look into.

The only question is really what features got split to what, and what do they share. By ideals, the 0.3.8 would literally just be renamed to 0.3.7-DL, and the 0.3.7 current simply has some of those basic features added from the 0.3.8.

Then that would be only the DL version has the download feature, but they would share all the others, and hence, this should be possible in some sense.

I see the same things happening with players, I have had multiple players say "but 0.3.8 has been released" and I had to keep telling them basically the same story.

It is like people don't know how to branch and don't know how release cycles work.

True, but keep in mind all those bug fixes in the DL version can't come into the 0.3.7, since 0.3.7 is already released. As i see a lot of people saying that they will also be in 0.3.7, but if that happens, your versioning is not correct anymore.

Also as I see there isn't any lack, just that most of the servers stay in the development version while the RC lasts and only release their updates for the new 0.3.8 when it is ready with a proper release, not RC.

This is correct, I myself had code written for the 0.3.8 release staged and even have a virtualhost to download custom content from online already.

And I know that TommyB was also developing a shitton of code and features for 0.3.8.

0.3.7 isn't just 0.3.7... It's got revisions.


The versioning is perfectly fine, and this HAS occurred before. 0.2.5 was a dev version that was canceled, and all of those features got added over time.

I didn't say they were failures, I said they had their failures... Don't try call out a native English speaker, if you can't understand English.

RC is not a release, so by spending your time working on it, don't be all upset like a mad rager that it got cancelled.


And as above... 0.2.5 got cancelled, all it's features were added to the next versions.
