Using other language knowledge in SA-MP
#1

Hey all,

Some of you may know me from back on the old SMF sa-mp forums, but I'm here for a general question and to see if anyone has had the same experience I have.

I have worked with VB for around two years now, and will begin studying java as part of my university degree in three months time. I am wondering whether transitioning over from one language to another is considered hard work? As I am looking to start working on a SA-MP script and have not touched the server files since 0.2. Would my knowledge and logical way of thinking that I've learnt from VB help me in SA-MP in anyway?

Have you ever used VB? It's out of the C family but I can understand what you're saying. It's one of the things they stated at my university interview that they'll teach us the basics and the fundamental transferable skills to use almost every language.

I have tried using Visual Basic. In-fact it's really easy to use... I mean, SA:MP is kind-of hard to learn, but when you learn it... You just don't forget it. Unless you haven't script since 0.2...!

SA-MP is not hard to learn, As harold said in his university every basics of language is thought, So far i can say it's all about learn and keep it in mind. Practice Practice and Practice.

EDIT:- Here SA-MP means PAWN.

It's actually called PAWN, not SA-MP. No need to repeat other people.

You don't need to jump in for just these, If you have eyes note other user, He said SA-MP too and i said SA-MP is not hard to learn. Where as he meant PAWN.

Actually, Khanz is right. When you're meaning it, mean it with the correct words so that others or even beginners won't get confused. Mistakes do happen to anyone though.

The functions which SA-MP provides are pretty easy to understand. The way of using them depends. It can vary on PAWN, C and on other languages too. Check out the plugins section, there are some plugins which allows SA-MP to be coded on some other languages too.

Lel vb is totally different from samp,
If you would have known about php,c,,it would be easier to pickup.

People have written wrappers for other languages, like this (however, out of date for the current version). Maybe tinkering around with it on an old version of SA-MP could be helpful to get back in to the swing of things for Pawn.

I think the hardest thing is trying to learn the callbacks and functions, but once you know what's possible within SA-MP it's quite easy to put things together.

Welcome back btw.

You people should try writing stuff in the Sanny Builder. The format of that is just like ASM. :P

Harold, I just started this and so far the scripts look pretty easy to comprehend.
