Help with difficult Math problem

Question:

If j is a positive integer and the remainder when j is divided by 11 is 5, what is the remainder when 3j + 2 is divided by 11?

So, its obvious that I need to find the dividend (right?) to use to find 3j + 2 / 11. But how can I find that If I don't even have the quotient?

I know the equation dividend = divisor * quotient + remainder
But with the few terms given it would come out to x = 11y + 5 which is far as I'm aware - impossible to solve.

Thanks for any help.

I'm not sure about this but this looks like the ecologic moduli problem.

It's useful, but probably useful if you have a super complex question. Private tutors cost like 41$ an hour if they're qualified, so $5 isn't too bad xD.

3(j + 2)/11 = 5
11(3j + 2)/11 = 55
33j + 22 = 55
33j = 33
j = 1

Not right. 5 is the remainder not the quotient. Sorry, Hiddos, it's not that easy

I'm VERY rusty at math so i can't solve it (mistakes), but since you have

j/11 = x+5 (x is a result of division, we don't care about it)

you must transform the equation so it'll look like this:

(3j + 2)/11 = kx+l

where l is the remainder

EDIT:
I did it, answer is 6 but i had to modify it xD

3j/11 = 3x+15 | +2
(3j+2)/11 = 3x+17 BUT since 17 is divisible by 11 with remainder:
(3j+2)/11 = 4x+6
I'm not taking any responsibility for this, but since Eng. Drebin says it's 6, it kinda looks good :P
