Mac vs PC... and Linux :D
#1

I think the whole Mac vs PC thing is completely stupid.

First of all, PC means Personal Computer, It has nothing to do with the operating system.
Secondly, by saying that you are a PC means that you are a dumb machine that relies on human written instructions in order to do anything, aka a TOOL.
[me=CodeMatrix]just lol'd[/me]

So, yeah... I think those commercial dudes should fix their terminology. A Mac is an operating system running on a PC, with a company name attached.

What do you think?

I think the new Windows OS is great (Windows 7). But I still favor Linux more than anything. As for Mac... I'm not the biggest fan... never really liked em. Although Mac is basically Linux... just screwed up.

i use microsoft because its the most compatible os for the things i use but i think linux based os like ubuntu are better made

most linux gui versions are awful for daily use imo,
espesially ubuntu and mint, they both run so slow. ive waited up to a minute for firefox to open in ubuntu

macs are good for design, anything that involves some kind of art, like photoshop, illustrator, design, etc
windows = good for pretty much everything daily use related, has the most functionality (also known as a pc.), its shit for servers
linux = good for servers, bad for daily use as a home computer

chrome os and w7 look promising, im going for w7 when its released though

An OS is all about personal preference.

For me, I use all 3.

Mac, Linux, and Windows.

The only reason I will not buy a Mac is because you are paying for over priced parts that suck ass. Its all about the name.

Other then that, the OS isn't horrible, but it could use some improvement.

What are you talking about? RAM is probably the cheapest part of a PC you can buy other then heatsinks/CPU coolers.

even if you have 1000000000000000000000 gb of ram nothing wont change only the number.

/facepalm

You probably bought from a company that doesn't even serve good clockspeeds for their RAM, and paid 110.

Funny how this Brand Name RAM is only $34 for 2GB.

I have these.

RAM does effect your system btw. Everything is on your system for a reason, not just numbers.

ye iTails is right theres a noticeable difference if you have 2gb of ram compared to 6, 12, or 16
Ive even noticed a huge jump in performance on vista with 2gb vs 4gb
You can get 12gb ddr3 1666mhz for 250-330 , its not that expensive

@the mac your buying, at first i thought it was a ripoff then i saw the processors and now it makes sense,
thats going to be one beast of a machine,
i would go for a dual xeon setup myself but im too comfortable with my c2q to make any changes :]

I could buy an Intel Core 2 Quad 3.06GHz for one sixteenth of the price of that mac.

I can't say that I absolutely hate Mac, I guess it's just that I never really had a chance to use it personally. I only used it in school more than a year ago.

Not only that... but I generally think that Mac is the Microsoft of Linux.

From what I've read, Mac is just a modified version of the GNU-Darwin Linux Distro.

But aside from that, I think Linux Distros are the best you can get. Yeah, they have problems running games, etc. From my experience, they crash WAY less than Windows, and run much faster than Windows.

Also... I'm not sure how many people know, but there are actually a company called Insigma Technology, that are working on a special Linux Kernel. The Kernel goes by the name of "Linux Unified Kernel", and it is basically the standard Linux Kernel, but with Ports of the Windows Kernel built in. This means that you can run your Windows Applications on Linux!

Quote:

The Linux Unified Kernel is a free, open-source computer operating system kernel project intended to expand the Linux Kernel to be binary-compatible with application software and device drivers not only made for Microsoft Windows but also made for Linux OS. This will enable the Windows application running on the Linux operating system highly effectively. Through the Linux Unified Kernel, we hoped the one who habituates to use Windows OS can continue their operation customs on Linux OS, so that third party software user purchased could be unconcerned with the platform of operating system. As before, for the user, once he purchased the Windows application software, from that time on only he could choose the Windows operating system, but now he may have another choice. Regarding Linux, this was certainly watershed and can improve the market competitiveness of desktop Linux.

^^Sounds sick to me^^

They have a site, for those interested. http://www.longene.org/en/index.php
I did try to install it, but I never installed it properly. LOL

But overall... as a programmer, I prefer Linux over everything. You get Much more control, and not only that... the OS doesn't have to be bloated.

Macs are great and all don't get me wrong, but your paying more for their R&D then the components. Also macs are a big fad at the moment, I know so many people who buy macs just because their friend has one or they already have an iphone and they want it to be compatible (lol). Windows has dominated the OS world and will continue to do so. You see Microsoft has a brilliant marketing plan that keeps them on top. What they do is they give away almost all of their professional software like Server 03/08, Visual Studio products, and many more to students who are entering the IT field. What this does is train the student in all MS products and when they go into the job market and are working for a company they will suggest MS products because they are familiar them. I see it everyday at school.

Also if you go to college for something in the IT field and don't know about the free software shoot me a pm and I will give you a link.

@iLinx That is a very true statement. If you look at the trends of tech and where everything is headed, then most people can see that we are headed to a more cloud based computing environment, and ****** is leading the way with that. One example would be Wave. Also ****** is becoming a driving force in the Mobile markets and soon to be in the netbook market, with Android and Chrome OS. The desktop is dying and the mobile revolution is coming upon us, as you can already see most people are abandoning their desktops for smartphones, netbooks, and laptops.
