Starting a server; still worth it?
#1

Hi all,

So long story short SAMP is a hobby of mine that I recently picked up again after a year or so. SAMP offers shit that I can't find in other games. For more than 1.5 year I have an (in my eyes) amazing idea for a gamemode that's - as far as I know - unique in SAMP. Hell, I even wrote down major parts of it and I have like 20 pages of handwritten notes of ideas. In addition to that I have an idea to target players outside SAMP as I think there's some potential there.

Now I can't find reliable sources on whether or not the playerbase grows or declines and what geographical areas and language groups are most popular.

Money to rent reliable servers isn't a problem, scripting isn't a problem either (although I will have to relearn some stuff after 2 years), the next few months I will only work part-time so there's some time to spend. On the other hand I lost most contacts in SAMP so I have to start from scratch when it comes to finding people to work with (key position players, staff), it'd be a huge time commitment and I don't know if it's all worth it.

What is your opinion? Would SAMP still work for a fresh idea?

The english community has declined, other languages have increased from what I can tell on hosted tab.

It acctualy hard to find English community RP servers.

The good ones I've liked are preety much closed due to some random crap.

If you are planning on creating quality server, go for it.
Just don't put too much time into it.
SAMP is getting old, new games offer way more features in every possible aspect.

Cheers!

If you are trying to create a server for the English community I would largely consider it a waste of time unless it is just a way to have fun or practice programming. If you are looking to make a successful server, you need to be targeting another language if not multiple different languages. The SAMP population in certain countries is booming.

Also keep in mind there's still a list of "good/active" English RP servers. But I just don't see my self in most of these.

No matter what anyone says, The truth is there - SA-MP is still very popular. The only thing is it can be hard to get a player count.

If you are going to start a server, make sure you have the funds to get a dedicated machine that runs 24/7.

Also, don't close it after a week if it fails to get players. The servers that are popular have been around for a long time.

There are but they are largely well established servers who have been around for ages. The few new ones were able to either steal players from another server or benefited from the closure of an existing server.

Role play servers are especially hard to start, few people want to play on an RP server with only a few players. They are also very saturated because everyone tries to make an RP server.

People are constantly searching for a unique server, at least that's what I do, so for my point of view, it would be a nice idea

It is worth it if you have the people that are going to be with you.

SA-MP ist more than enough popular to open a server. If you did a good job some players will also "come back" to the game.

If you want to do it - do it. Don't let anyone stop you, 55000 people still play on average, even 50 of them would make a successful server. Unique and well ran with good admins and a unique experience and you're sorted.

Very Nice.
Tell your cousin to send you IP so we can play too!

Do not waste your time, it's imminently dying and will be dead in a few years. Only a few poor countries (no offense, but it's true) still play it.

Well it's true.

But it doesnt really matter if country is poor or not.
I'm still enjoying playing samp more over new games.
It's just addictive like casino is.

@zgintasz

Those ****** trends represent nothing, people ****** that term once when they're installing and then they don't ****** it for a few months maybe even years. I agree that players from western countries are declining but why is that a problem? Language barrier? I played with people from Brazil/Romania/Pakistan/India/Phillipines/Russia and most of them know basic english and you would be surprised how many of them know very good english.

Doesn't matter, I aint from US or EU, You can call me a citizen of poor country but as I said it doesn't matter.
There are still so many players in Samp, if You (or anyone who wants to start a server) organize it well, Players will come and the most important thing to start a server isn't the Number of people but is "Density", some servers use LS/SF/LV/Counties, and you can see players rarely, but if they focus on ONE location such as LS or Counties or even one village like Dillimore and players see other players more often, your investment won't be wasted.
This is my opinion, it shouldn't be one hundred percent true.

Edit: I can RP on GTA V but I rather Samp.

Haha, Lithuania is no 1.
No surprise tho, our textdraw's and mapping is in next level. And we have or had big servers with real players, unlike russian 1000 bot servers. Also, we don't realy like RP servers, but we love RPG or as we call it "GRP". Tho, we are slowly droping down cuz of games like LOL and CSGO and unactive development in biggest projects. New version of samp could boost player number too.

So, should you ? Yes, cuz english servers are stuck in stone age.

Love Russian part,
In fact, My opinion isn't just about RP, You can make your DM, TDM, RPG, etc server but "Density" will say the first word.
