Anyone must take care and try to avoid this attacks , but how ?
Note: i used a brute force attack on a WiFi hahaha , but that makes the owners bored and that's illegal , so i think that scripting is better than being a hacker

Few Tips:
Make sure you are using strong and long passwords (for each MySQL, FTP, SSH, etc..)
Use a provider that provides DDoS protection
Do not hand out any private information to anyone, only to those who are trustworthy.
Make sure you keep your computer clean, do not launch malicious applications and scan your computer weekly with trustworthy anti-virus/malware applications like Malwarebytes and Bitdefender.

If you are using a VPS then I would suggest learning on how to protect your server against bruteforce attacks, there are guides that this website http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/ that can help assist you.

If your server is running on good hosted tab the provider should offer DDoS prottection etc.

Also as xPhantom said make sure to make your passwords hard to be hacked.

What the heck are you on about? The hosted tab provider has nothing to do with this.

Tips:
Use Strong passwords (E.G: hIdjXhq@2#)
Don't give details out to people.
Use a good hosting provider

People who i like to use:
OVH
BlazingFast(Webhosting & Linux based VPS's)
Depending if you want a shitty hosted tab or not (SimplyFrag)

There are also a lot of other places you can search for reliable companies.
