GTX 970 or R9 290X for gaming?
#1

Hello,

I'm planning to purchase a new GPU for gaming!

I got an HD 7770 but it's way too old for new games, i wanna play games (such as GTA V, Battlfield) on 1080p Very High Settings.. I was wondering which card would be better for my purpose?

I got an core i5 4670, 12gigs of memory...

Please suggest!

Thanks

290x is now a bit outdated.
But 970 is a beast card and such an efficiency is amazing. If you can afford it get it!

i think you should buy GTX 970 becoz GTX 970 has less watts + better performence and amd r9 290x has more watts + to much heat which cause ( boom ) bust

If you can't give a full reason why not to trust AMD then shut up.

They both great graphics cards but i really would pick R9 290X
but this is so much better then r9 290x

Why don't you just explain what's wrong with AMD then? I've been using AMD for years and haven't found a single issue yet.

For 1080p gaming, the GTX 970, for anything over 1080p gaming, 290X.
That's only because of the VRAM issue with the 970.

290x > 970

The 970 is a gimped GPU with only 3.5GB Vram

GTX 970 is fully DirectX 12 supported so expect a performance boost when it releases.
+ 290x is power house. much heat and power consumption as compared to 970.

i would recommend newer gpu always which does maybe a bit 5-10% less but has more longevity then 2 year olders

290x easily. The GTX 970 is slower and is gimped with only 3.5GB of usable VRAM even though it is supposed to have 4GB.

I mean you can go the Nvidia but you will only get half of what you paid for.

Things like this, you'll get a green vs red war. If you compare the two, the 290x is a better card for the most part, however it does use more power and generate more heat. Some people are willing to trade off the heat/power consumption for the better performance. The 290x is also a generation older than the 970. Keeping that in mind, I would go for the 290, personally. I've had an R9 card for nearly 2 years and not had a single problem, it's well cooled and performs well. Though, if you want something of the latest generation and a lot of power, save up for a GTX 980.

Also, that whole thing of AMD cards never lasting is BS. The best computer I ever bought was used, about 8 years ago and I paid $100 for it. That machine has a lot of hours and runs amazing, infact I still have it. It has an AMD cpu, that when I bought it had no thermal paste (and ran like that for at least 5 years), never an issue with it. I have 2 more of the same computer but with an intel card (You know, those little HP desktop things, most of you probably have had one) and both of those had on board video problems. I consider AMD pretty reliable

I have always preferred AMD over nVidia, and I'm also going to recommend R9 290X. It's not about fandom, but call me crazy, nVidia fans are more into that whole "buy nVidia because it rox" thing.
