Mainly they do it to get reputation, to make themselves known around SA-MP forums, and just to brag about it.

It's either what the baron said, or they are forced to. For example if somebody steals your work and starts selling it, spreading it around, it's best if you release it in order to limit their profit and all that.

If I had a let's say role play server and I decided to close it, I would gladly share the script as what's the point of having it in your computer if not being used? And I hate the fact that people like baron thinks that people only publish for those kind of reasons. What if there's someone that actually wants to be nice? Some people maybe wanted to build a script mainly to publish it as an example of how to create a game mode. I for instance would do it just to help out people, I have enough with reputation to advertise servers now so what's the point of getting more reputation, in my opinion?
For instance what's the point of helping people in the helping section? Yes there are people looking for only reputation but there are some that just help for a good cause and do not even care about reputation at a certain point. I cared when I had below 15 but now I don't care anymore. Are all people like this? No, it's true what is said above, some are the way they are but you can still change yourself.
And Anon, it's people like you that probably never think of anything nice to do to people that would be free, free as in you wouldn't gain anything from it. Get rid of that kind of thinking and be a better human dammit! (Don't take this offensively dear. :P)

@Hans, The reason I think like that is because most of the people I stumbled upon, were posting their beloved scripts for fame and reputation. I forgot to mention it, but there is an exception for some authors, which are nice/kind enough to release their scripts to the public.

They'd don't earn a cent. Most, if not all, gamemodes were released by unloyal scripters that felt the need to share the script to the public in hope it will ruin the servers value/make it hard to sell the script when the owner tries to later on.
Never trust your scripters.

some people do it as a way to give back to the community or they want to see people enjoy their work, I myself only keep a server running because I enjoy it when I hear people like my what I've done.
of course with hosting a server comes cheaters and other drama, releasing a game mode is a way for people to enjoy your work without having to deal with that stuff

Maybe they want to help people who can't script their own?

Some people don't even care about reputation on the forum.
Like myself, I released my gamemode PPC-Trucking because I have no way myself to host a live server 24/7.
Also, there were only a few trucking scripts here and I just wanted to share it after creating it for myself and my son.
Since most users of my gamemode had almost no idea to add/change routes and such, I decided to start working on PPC-Trucking V2, which holds in-game editing stuff to make it easier for server-owners to create new routes.
Before release, I never imagined it would have much success.
Afterwards, many people told me they learned to script by disecting my gamemode, changing stuff and so on.
I just like to help people out and release something nice in the process, so others can use it.
