Windows 7 or 8
#21

Windows 7 is probably the best once made so far.
Havent tested 8, but I also dont plan to, as i heard it sucks asses.
XP is number 2 right after Win7, but support for newer hardware might get worse.

Get Windows 8. Profit. PC starts up faster, shuts down faster, works faster and doesn't use as much recources as windows 7 - About games etc: works perfectly. I'm not planning to update to 8.1 though - There aren't so much changes.

I used Windows XP from 2005-2012 , 7 years ftw. Also i had a bad PC then and it really sucked for gaming and for other stuff. Now i have a new better PC and with Windows 7, everything is cool now. I'd say both XP and Win7 are good, but win7 is ofcourse way better.

XP is great. I have a copy of Windows 7, but personally I choose XP because it's more suitable for my needs (programming, internet).

Windows 8 (now 8.1) <3..
Was hating it too, that shitty metro and everything else, but when I gave it a chance.. damn, I will never go back to that oldschool windows 7. Same happened to everyone I know (everyone was hating it but then tried it out completly for 1-2 weeks and now they would never go back to windows 7). I now look at windows 7 as XP, something old and slow, featureless..

And no, I haven't had any problems with gaming or something else, it feels even more stable than on windows 7 (ex. I had about 90 frames in Windows 7 @ gta sa 1080p low, now I have 90-100 with very high and many graphic mods.. Another thing - I could never record 50fps 1080p video with fraps back in windows 7 without no lag spikes at all).

I laugh at haters

Windows 8.1 is better than 8.0 though, IMO.

Windows 8 was designed for touch interfaces and it has absolutely no business being on a desktop environment. Metro is fucking stupid. And that's to put it kindly.

For me:

Usability: Windows 7 - It's a tie between Windows 8.1 and 7 if you install a start menu add-on. Edge goes to 7 because you shouldn't need to install 3rd party software to make your system usable.

Speed: Windows 8.1 - Windows 8.1 is generally faster than Windows 7 and 8.

Stability: Windows 7 - Windows 7 has been perfectly stable for me, but I had Windows updates break my Windows 8 install. No real problems with 8.1 yet in this area.

Features: Windows 8.1 - New DirectX 11.2, new task manager, Windows refresh etcetc.
Actually,

Usability: Windows 8.1 - Many people dislike Metro, but haven't tried to figure it out and learn it's environment. When you do it, it's must faster and much more usable than that old, slow classic start menu.. Besides, if you don't want the metro, there are many alternatives that removes it and brings back start menu, so this is not really a problem.. I work better and faster with Metro than start menu, Win7 users are even wondering how do I do things so fast and how some things are even possible..

Speed: ... I don't think I need to comment this one. Windows 8.1.

Stability: Windows 8.1 - Windows 7 was heavy, slow and unstable at the same time.. With windows 7, it was crashing/freezing/bugging every 2-3 days, I could not run it more than ~7 days without restarting.. With windows 8/8.1, in last 6 months, there have been only few times where it crashed/freezed or bugged.. The gaming is much more stable, so is FPS, programs and startup also feels much more stable and faster, also uses less resources and is friendlier. Never again, windows 7!

Features: Windows 8.1 - Windows 8 and 8.1 have shitload of new features and solutions, such as built-in cloud, easy screenshot capturing (no paint required), better account system (synced), much better explorer and indexing/searching, Hyper-V, the ones you mentioned and so on..

Im not a windows fan, I would actually switch to linux, but I'm IT specialist/scientist and I have to work with many environments and operating systems, Windows 8.1 feels most usable and best for home user/gaming.
