Hi!


You always here there's horrible crimes going on from news or just get spread around.

Well crimes have always existed, but it feels like it gets more and more frequent.
Or does the news just telling more to get money?.

Are it more crimes now then back in the time?.

I think about Europe mostly as I live there.

Just interesting to know..

Apparently the level of crime is going down, but what with internet stuff it's getting easier for everyday people to steal money!

Crimes will never end. The rate of crime is getting upper and sometime lower. I believe it is increasing and also getting advance.

I'm currently working on an essay to explain the relation between safety and the perceived safety. Though it is not finished, I think this is what happens nowadays:

Crime gets committed -> Media covers it -> People talk about it -> Media thinks 'hey everybody talks about crimes so it must be something of their interest' -> Media covers more crimes -> People conclude the crime rate's gone up. -> People feel unsafe

It sorta makes sense to think like that, but the media should never be trusted. You'd better stick to actual numbers released by your government instead. On top of that, if would only make sense if crime rates are dropping: techniques are getting more advanced every day.

I would say that crimes were always present, we can't get proof if its increasing or decreasing, cause the media can publish wenever they want, and theres people that committed crimes and the police never knew about it, so basicly, we are unable to say that its increase or decreasing.

Yeah, but you also didn't have (international) TV, the Internet, portable videocameras and mobile Internet 50 years ago.
Also, like previously said in this topic, people LOVE to hear stories about people who are worse off that them, so there are even more violent news on TV (all just cuz of tha moniez $$$$).

More laws are being set in place to prevent violent crimes, and coverage about it has exploded since the invention of TV/Radio/Internet.

The crime rates are going down and there is actually evidence for it.

PS:
Inb4 'Hurr hurr America's prisons are all full hurr hurr' yes because those idiots jail people for smoking weed. If all countries were that stupid then there would be as many prisons as there would be hospitals.

From what I can see in Switzerland, the violent crime rate is getting lower every year but most people don't know it because the medias are manipulating the news title to scare people. For example, one newspaper here (Le Matin) wrote "Run of bad luck : 20 murders in 22 weeks !" or "Run of bad luck in Switzerland : One murder every week !" with a pistol on the front page. But statistics are showing that the amount of murders in Switzerland are decreasing :
2007 : 1,9 per week.
2008 : 2,1
2009 : 1,9
2010 : 1,6
2011 : 1,3

I don't have the number for 2012, but according to what's written in the newspaper, the amount of murders per week in 2013 is 0,9. What's the goal of our medias ? Inform us or terrorize us ?

Regarding the other crimes (drugs, internet, ...), I'm not really aware if it's increasing or decreasing.
