how to make a VPS?
#1

How can I create a VPS out of a PC I have that I don't use anymore? I've been looking for a tutorial for a while but haven't found anything useful. If anyone knows a good tutorial please comment it

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

What you're looking for is a hypervisor. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypervisor
There are different ones out there, each with their own pros and cons.

Just a suggestion, just because you want to use your old PC and turn into a VPS. If that works think about the internet speed you might need. and other stuff.

If you want to turn your PC into a simple server, just install a server OS on it like Windows Server or a GNU/Linux distribution like Debian or Red Hat. You can also use a "normal" Windows but you won't have as much tools as Windows Server.

If you want to have multiple VPS on a single PC, you need to get a virtualization software or OS. It depends what you want to do. As written in the wikipedia article that DaRealShazz gave you, you have two types of virtualization :
  • Bare meta : Install a virtualization dedicated operating system (hypervisor) on your PC. I worked with three different ones (VMWare ESX, Citrix XenServer, Microsoft Hyper-V). You can get ESXi or XenServer, which are amazing products, for free with some limitations (some features for big infrastructures you won't even use). If you have a PC you want totally dedicate to that, go with ESXi which is very easy to use, you just need to fill out a form in order to get the free licence.
  • Hosted : Install a virtualization software like Oracle VirtualBox or VMWare Workstation on your current Windows installation and create your VMs with that. This is more recommended for tests, except if you use OpenVZ on a GNU/Linux host.

Hyper-V doesn't work on all Windows versions, he needs to be running Windows Server 2008 R2+,
or Windows 8 64-Bit.

And hardware assisted virtualization.

And as far i read he said "old PC" so i don't think he would be able to run Hyper-V.

Actually, there is a free version of Hyper V for Both 2012 and 2008 R2. They must be 64bit, and yes It does use hardware assisted virtualization, but most hypervisors use that.. You could also use VM Ware's ESXi.. But like a previous post said, your best bet is just to install a server os on the pc, whether it be windows or linux, is up to you...
