You need a DVD version, downloaded Steam or other direct2drive versions wont work.

The steam version doesnt support multiplayer , You rather get one from one of your local game stores or buy it from eBay or amazon

Ok thank you all , here is my issues though . I want to go to gamestop and buy this one http://www.gamestop.com/pc/games/gra...productDetails but im not sure if its the proper product . So i wanted to know if this one from amazon is the correct one http://www.amazon.com/Grand-Theft-Au...ds=san+andreas ?

Yes, the Amazon one is fine. It says "second edition" which I'm assuming is version 2.0, but you can download a patch on the SA-MP website to downgrade it to version 1.0 to be able to play SA-MP.

The Steam version has been proven to have fixes to get it working. so he can buy it from steam if he chooses.

the DVD copy should work fine too.
