It's a slice of a dedicated machine, that's the most user-friendly definition. A dedicated machine or server is a computer which is built to be a server. Now you can then divide this further in to x amount of slices/VPSs.

Lets just say that it is... A seperate computer you can access from your own, and host things. That's my explanation.
A VPS (Virtual Private Server) is just like a Physical Server aka Dedicated Server, except it Virtual. It mainly can do the same capabilities you would be able to do on the computer, except - It's virtual.
