Is it possible to copyright a SAMP Servers name?
#1

I run a server called bone county roleplay, and on my forums a person from another server named bone county roleplay came on and told us they had a copyright on the name and told us to change it or they would contact SAMP administration, but if Bone County belongs to rockstar games, how can they copyright that? Can someone please chime in here?

Simply put: They are lying.

It's not cheap to copyright a name, it will cost you up to thousands of euros depending on which geographical location you want the copyright to take place. So I doubt that the guy who contacted you have the copyright and depending on if R* Games have copyright on it, then it's impossible for him to have it.

Names can't be copyrighted, they can only be trademarked. But honestly, anyone can just name their server "<any place in San Andreas> Roleplay". Get original.

You are correct, however, trademarked still means that if they lose players due to the fact that the other guy's server has the same name and if they have that name trademarked then they can actually sue the other server. But still, TM can cost up to thousands of euros so I doubt this will happen.

Bone County is a name from a copyrighted game, and so is protected as property of rockstar games. So now claiming "Bone County Roleplay" as their own protected name is a pure fail, protecting names in general is a fail, and you wont find anyone who ever "copyrighted a server name".

The short answer is: No, they can't have copyright on that name.

Personally tell them to show the proofs as they cannot take copyright as that simple name.

Or respond with the warning to sue them for faked copyright claims, add the explanations from this thread. This should shut them up.
