VPS cheaper then Gameserver?
#1

Hey Guys,

Have you ever wondered....

You find it cheaper to buy a VPS for $11 USD that can host your teamspeak and SA-MP Server (with how much slots you want) instead of buying a Gameserver (like for a certain amount of slots) then it for $11 USD.

I found it cheaper to buy a VPS and get everything, all you need is to learn how to set it up, and use it correctly.

VPS hosting has bad sides too, like limited bandwidth usage, if you can't setup your server there is no support like in hosting company, then DDOS attacks and few more things. In good hosting company you dont have to care about this, and with 11 $ u can get 100 or more slots and have nice control panel. vps is easy to setup but not easy to manage, for example if you get DDOS-ed you will go down in few hours.

The real question is, have you ever bought a VPS for $11 and actually seen what happens when you have 500 players online? Most hosts will suspend you under some form of fair share term violation.

It depends on which hosts your using...

If you actually had 500 online, the VPS wouldn't be able to handle it you would've had to purchase a dedicated server..

Same thing with gameservers, they'll suspend you for the same purposes and most likely they would have a CPU Limit.

Again as you said, it does vary on the host you use. But yes, sometimes getting a VPS can be more cost-effective.

11$ is equivalent to something between 60-80 slots server hosting at cheap average prices. From my experiences this isnt a problem for a VPS. Also you can use the vps for more things like webhosting, radio streaming etc for free.
So as long as you know what to do with a vps it will be cheaper in my opinion.

Also 500 slots cost 125$/month on volthost. For that you can get a quite mighty dedicated or root, probably one you are using to host like 5 or more 500 slot servers. So you really shouldnt talk about 500 slots to rate the 11$ vps price.

It's about that same thing. Also remember the time it takes to maintain your VPS and be responsible for what ever issues are are/will experience

I got my Dedicated server for free. RRP Price is Ј40, it's:

CentOS 5. (With parallels)
24 GB Ram.
4 * 3.2GHZ AMD Processors.
2 * 2 TB HDD Space. (4TB)
Unlimited Bandwidth.

I'd imagine when you pay for 500 slots you get 500 slots from a gsp, anything less would be against the point of the service, unless you're buying some form of a packaged deal.

$125 / mo will generally (at a budget provider / network) get you $500-$700 of hardware put into a 1U case. You are free to calculate this yourself based on average amortization rates of servers and annual returns.

Personally I would not host 5x 500 player servers on this but you are free to do as you wish.

Our servers are now generally dual proc+ 12+ cores with 32GB+ RAM (just saying). Standard server build, not computer build.
