Windows Live Messenger does this a lot. Try checking your firewall and make sure no settings were changed in there. Also try a restart of your pc.

I had some weired error and all that cos i changed my date to 2010...lol
Maybe you did the same..if so just fix your time and date and everything will be ok

Use a 3rd party to connect to MSN, eg Pidgin, Empathy, etc. They always seem to be a lot more reliable than the actual MSN client is.
