Finding The Best?
#1

Just a simple question but I think some background information is required firstly. I'm in my late twenties and I've been involved with SA:MP since 2007, administrating and managing various servers and forums but I'm at a stage now in which I've encountered before. My new server is going well, usually quiet at times but I know it's going to get busier and I believe the foundations for success are in position but I have a question for the more mature members here, it's this:

How did you find, cultivate and keep good quality moderators/administrators on your server?

I know it's important to test and observe potential recruits in various situations before considering their promotion but do any of you have any advice or suggestions? The situation I have at the moment is that it's very difficult to find and recruit mature, fair and calm people who can be trusted with power and responsibility - they usually want the administration status without doing the work or to impress their friends or once given privileges, they end up with inflated egos and cease to relate well to others. I know and manage good moderators and administrators now but I know I will need to look further for more but where or how did you find yours? I think this is probably an issue for all serious individuals who just want to maintain a good, stable project with a dedicated team so surely some of you can relate to this discussion. Perhaps you can share some of your good and bad experiences?

Selecting the wrong people can bring complaints and accusations of corruption. Yet players expect a large administration presence without understanding that people in positions of responsibility and power need to be selected carefully for their abilities and capacity to treat their role seriously without resorting to misuse of their powers - it's a difficult balance to maintain. So to return to the question; how did you find, cultivate and keep good quality moderators/administrators on your server? Thanks.

What i do for my previous server's i just picked the ones who are not desperate.
So they wont disturb me about promotion's , I tell them the basic's which is to ban the hacker.

Each of my server's have a certain rank for each server. i do NOT have co owner's , I only have 1 scripter , 1 mapper , 2 administrator's , And that;s it =)

I dont use a anti hack system because there wont be a purpose for administrative rank's if the machine is banning all :\

Another thing with ownership is that you start to develop feelings for some of your worker's , Not as in love , But as in you dont want to make him sad. Well i show no mercy and ban them from server'.

And the last type's of admins to get is the one's who would ban a user who hack's. Because some admin's normally do shit like 'Dont do it again plz i dont want to ban u =D"

And 1 more thing to watch out for is the admin's who gives there friend's free stuff and shit , It really get's on my nerves when i leave a server with 2 admin's and when i rejoin theres fucking 1000 admins .

Administrating and managing extends beyond banning hackers. There should be discussions and investigative tactics that can be well used throughout the team to get further into the issue.

Generally speaking, finding one of the more loyal members who are friends with nearly everyone on the server is a start. Usually the ones who aren't in trouble, ask questions, and help others on their own without being an obvious attention deprived child.

I don't trust the user's. Which is why i started off on sa-mp with a group named xDesignz , I trust them and every time i open a server , There the only high ranked player's.

I check for the ones who type maturely, less OMG GIMME PL0X and more accurate capitalization, commas and apostrophes.

I also get to know them fairly well.

As in the one's who type with capital letter's and stuff?
Don't be fooled by does either , Once they get admin they think there invincible , They start to do shit that isn't human and is basically abusing.

What ive always done is asked people who have a playtime of more than 2 months if they want to be a admin. (I dont do this anymore, i dont need any more admins).

But player's like to stay AFK and get point's , So they just goto sleep with the GTA Server open and getting point's.
You should seek intelligence from a player to consider him as a administrator.

Intelligence isn't a natural thing. Intelligence is something you're born into by your surroundings and experience. Simply selecting intelligence? That's like asking for the best in a job offer when you're opening a small business compared to a corporation.

Intelligence isn't a requirement. You only need those for 1 or 2 leaders. You, yourself, is more than sufficient. Imagine yourself as the manager. The manager doesn't do work. The manager tells those he hired what to do, they follow specifically, or be fired.

Complaints? A good manager can negotiate and show leniency for the first few mistakes. If the same mistakes are constant, let down the guillotine.

The most effective methods is to start off with the select best candidates. Later on you find players whom are interested in joining your team. What do you do? Tell them to 1. Be active. 2. Be helpful toward new players. and 3. If they assist you in recruitment of new players and the player-base is larger, promotions will be granted. Giving a trial or level 1 position isn't a major loss compared to the players that one person is now raking in, correct?

You aren't trying to get perfection right off. The end justifies the mean.

I had to play an empty server for 3 months, first week or two with mainly hackers to discover this. Take it to heart. Learn to trust. Hope for the best.

Well, having discovered today that two of my own moderators were taking advantage of a command glitch for their own benefit, I've had to demote them so we're now down to 4 team members. I'd like to take this opportunity to invite any mature, fair and responsible readers for a team trial.

What's required? | What the server needs is calm, fair and enthusiastic people that would like to spend some time guiding players, answering questions from participants while maintaining a fair, open and positive attitude to the work involved. You've got to be perceptive; you need to be aware and able to switch roles from player to moderator/administrator. As a moderator, you will be expected to enforce the rules and regulations of the server. You may also need to conduct some administrative tasks which require absolute trust in your position. You'll also be expected to do your time and attend the server regularly, while using good English to communicate.

How can I get a trial? | Following years of experience I've personally found that the best approach is to recruit those that show themselves to be good players, showing a wide variety of qualities that reflect what the server needs. You should try to behave like a moderator, keep calm and if you're new; try to make plenty of friends. You have to develop and maintain a good reputation for guiding players and supporting the server in your own way. Speak good English, don't swear or get angry, make us notice you for what you do on the server. Let us observe you for some time and if you can develop and sustain a great reputation amongst our players with a mature personality you'll probably get a trial with us.

The server team at this time is obviously small to reflect the average number of players online but current members are from across the world. Bad behaviour, inappropriate conduct or corruption are taken seriously and I'll personally do all I can to address any concerns or reports of such instances as mentioned. I intend to achieve a high standard of team membership with people of integrity, fairness and intelligence in the right positions of influence and ability to do their jobs well. For more details and to speak to me regarding this you can contact me at the server/website shown in my signature. Thanks for reading!
