RolePlay? WTH is this?

Hi. I'm new to SAMP, and I see this Los Santos RolePlay server. It seems to be the most popular one. WTH is it? Your someone to act stuff out like your in drama class or something? How the hell is that fun? Can someone explain this to me? What nut-case thought this would be a good idea? Thanks.

It's basically playing in a virtual world living out your fantasies with a set of rules bound to the 'world'. If you don't find it fun, don't bash it. It's the most popular thing on SA:MP actually, and it's striving above any other type of server.

I've never played it, so I don't know if it's fun. I was wondering why people find it fun? What's so fun about it?

I personally find managing and administrating the RP environment entertaining myself. However role-playing can be entertaining at times.

It's not for everyone, and at times it can be extremely boring, even when interacting with other players. I personally prefer to role-play a legal civilian, working day by day. Others find gang banging doing illegal activities entertaining as can be somehow. I'm going to take one of the most popular forms of RP style for my example, the gang-banger. Imagine growing up in the ghetto with no money, friends, or values of your own. You need to work your way to the top, and doing so you obtain and sell drugs, guns, and stolen goods. As you interact meeting new people, you begin to realize they want you to join their gang, other wise they're going to beat you severely. You take their offer up and begin to work for them, progressing in 'respect' within the gang meeting others. You go out, spraying graffiti throughout the city with your gangs tag. Your home boys are feeling a bit high and have this idea they're going to take a trip into the rivals turf and spray it up. Next thing you notice a group of 8-14 men jump out of the vehicle, equipped with brass knuckles, bats, and one Asian that appears to know Tae Kwon Do. Not only is your 4 home boys shaken in their boots, you're out numbered and cornered. Before you have time to even think about running they're beating the living out of you, stealing everything you own. All they left for you is a black eye and your clothing. Your gang members left you to rot, and sit alone. They deserted you, leaving you to suffer. You thought they tried to fight them off with you - but they didn't. Not only do you know longer have an idea of what to do, you have nothing - once again. This is when the cops roll in, seeing you. You take off without hesitation scared and shocked.

You don't know why you're running, but you are. You jump the fence, limping after landing. The officer rolls up in front of you in a cruiser and jumps out, charging his tazer. You quickly hop into the pool of water that you just so happen to be standing by. But suddenly, you realize you cannot swim. You never learned as a kid growing up in the ghetto with nothing. You begin to panic, slashing your arms left and right screaming and yelling for help. You don't want to drown, do you? No. Officer Christian drops his gear, diving in after you. After picking you out of the water, they cuff you up. Granted you're no longer in the position you want to be, you feel gratitude for them. They saved your life after all. You explain you have nothing on you, no friends, nothing. You're new to the city - in theory. But as Officer Christian reaches into your baggy pants, he finds something: it's a bag of weed. He asks and questions you about it, and you deny it. Suddenly something hits you, and you have a flashback of your so called friends planting it on you when they ran.

Not only did they just screw you over, you're now heading to jail for possession of illegal narcotics. You try and explain you've never seen the weed before, but they don't believe you. They're being generous and ignoring the fleeing and alluding stunt you just pulled on them. You try everything you can to escape the cruiser, but you cannot. It's too strong from within. You just want to burst out and cry, and you do. You don't know why, but you do. They begin to feel remorse as you do, and they let you out taking your weed. You're happy, but once again, confused. You're now left back on the street to regain your respect and work your way up in the food chain, with nothing. You decide to take your life in a new direction, working.

Now that's just the typical 'I'ma gang banga!!!' style. I prefer playing a rich legal boy myself. Role-playing is basically using your imagination applying server rules, physics, and other realistic things to the game. Now the chances you're going to find a role-play scene where the other guy isn't there to win, is unlikely in SA:MP. However when everything is being played out fairly, it's fun. I don't know about you, but I don't find doing the same repetitive tasks shooting someone daily, or doing stunts fun.

Wow, you should write a fiction book, I would read it :P I was so engrossed in that story xD.

But still, how the hell would you act that out in-game? You would need people to play your gang, you'd need a cop your friends with to help you roleplay and everything. Seems like alot of work for something that could potentially be boring. Obviously part of fun is not knowing whats going to happen. Eg. In a CaR server, you don't know if you'll catch the crook / get away from the cops.

It would be quite boring if you knew what was going to happen because you imagined it, wrote it up, and did it in-game. :/

The thing is Mike, decisions in a good RP server with people who know what they're doing don't think of it before hand. It just happens where decisions are happening within 1-2 seconds at most. Sometimes you'll see two people flip a coin for an action that may be changing the way the outcome is. I really, really dislike having to role-play a scene that is thought out before hand, or planned in a "out-of-character" conversation. It feels extremely boring when it happens like that, as I know what will happen.

You need to remember in a server with players online your virtual characters meets virtual people. To your virtual character, they're real people that he has never seen before. Most servers have cops and gang bangers by default.

I love the fast paced RP where things change constantly and everyone isn't in it to win it. The ones who like role-playing a cramp in their arm or leg, the weapon jamming, or something going utterly wrong within reason. And I truly love playing with the ones who can role-play a retarded character, or one with an extreme case of paranoia well.

It's hard to explain, and there's a few basic rules you need to understand before you can actually do it without being yelled at. The problem with just joining a server and trying to learn is always discouraging as a majority of the SA:MP players are preadolescence kids that resort to name calling when you ask how to do something.

Had to make an example that would grab your attention, as saying something typical would be vaguely boring. But thanks for the compliment. Was something I threw together as I wrote.

lol thats why i play on freeroam servers. You do what you want, when you want to; as apposed to being forced to do something you do not like.

Racing/DM/Mini games has always been more fun to me.

Yep, for most of the time i hate RP, for the rest of it i DM them. (Carbombs and planes against bunch of .... ). GX I think is the best for massive multiplayer fun, look it up on hosted list.

Well as you say. RP is a gamemode type which a lot of scripters prefer to make and it's beginning is comming from GF, and lots of RP's are actually GF script edits. See the God father script notes for description what you can do in the game. Usually they try to limit your abilities but usually they fail. So don't try glitch something cause you can easy do it.
