Ok call me stupid but... what are you supposed to do in SAMP? Just run around and get as many kills as possible, like Unreal Tournament and other shooty games? Or are there any general tactics people tend to deploy, any missions you can do, etc etc?

Depends on the gamemode the server is running: roleplay, deathmatch, stunt, race, ..

Ah ok, is there a guide anywhere to how each mode works? Or is it obvious if I just go into each mode and try it out...

Race = Racing
Roleplay = A secondary life (but on GTA)
DM = Kill
Stunt = Have fun and get skilled
Freeroam = waist time with your friends
Fly = Just fly arround....

You should first go and see a server which you like first, you will understand it yourselve, there is no need of making a thread for this.

I was asking because I didn't have a clue! I looked at the server list but it's pretty unclear and every single server type is different, there's really not much structure to it. I know some have "DM" or whatever but it would help if you could actually view lists of servers of a certain type so that you don't have to trawl through trying to figure out what each server is going to be like.

Then again maybe I'm just being dim... lol :P

The best way to know what servers you like better is to simply try them out. There can be times where many servers have very similar scripts and you might like one over the other because of the administration team etc. So all I can say is just try a few out, its what I did a little over a year ago when I first started.

Dude, go onto a Roleplay server you'll never get bored it's great fun with all the gangs and roleplay.
