Nope. It involves the flooding of your network, clogging it up.

There is no way to protect against DDoS. It's just a fact of the internet that anyone with more bandwidth than you can effectively silence you.

If there were software that protected servers against DDoS, all servers would be running them by default.

Some server providers claim to have DDoS protection, but what they actually have is a large amount of unused bandwidth capacity, which they can allocate to you in the event of an attack. If the attacker has more bandwidth than the server provider, they can't do anything to protect you from DDoS.

The only real way to deal with DDoS is to find the source IPs of the attack, look up the abuse email of for the IP netblock owner (arin, RIPE, APNIC, afrinic, lacnic) and send a complaint to the abuse email containing packet logs of the attack.

Edit:

So that I don't confuse anyone: There are many types of network attack that do not rely on bandwidth to take down the target. Whether these should all fall under the category of 'DDoS' I don't know. Attacks that don't rely purely on bandwidth can be often be filtered and blocked. But generally they may require analysis of the attack type.

The most important thing is that you understand what is happening. If you understand what the attacker is doing, you'll be able to look at some type of defense.

The basic skills that you need to protect computer networks are: Bandwidth monitoring (graphs or command line tools like iftop), CPU/memory monitoring, packet capturing and analysis.
