Linux Server On AMR-11 Procesor
#1

Hi!
I wanna buy Raspberry Pi (ver. B) ( http://www.raspberrypi.org/quick-start-guide ), and i wanna use this for hosting my samp server.
This is simple "computer" with AMR11 Procesor (like android devices), 512 MB Ram, and simple Graphic (cost US$ 35 ), and this USING LINUX!
So... When ill have this, can i run linux version on "soft-float Debian “wheezy”" without trouble with version of processor ?
If current version don`t support AMR Procesor, maybe new version (0.3x) can get support for this procesor type!

Thanks for respond!

Sory, but this isnt my LANGUAGE!...

You can get a VPS with 512 MB Ram for 3 USD($) with will have better network than a home network(Which i assume you are going to use).

Uh..your home network is that?

And I also want a Raspberry Pi just to own. I was thinking about asking for maybe support to be added for a linux server to work for it. For now, there isn't anything else you can really do with it right now. The Pi is really for educational purposes.

No, you have a 100Mbit network card installed in your computer. That doesn't mean you have synchronous 100mbit at your house.

I got one for various robotic stuff (preordered it and waited for months, then i got the old 256mb version on the same day it was upgraded to 512). Though you should know that, like any other software, samp would need to be compiled for that processor architecture. Normally samp wont run on it. Maybe it could run in a x86 emulator, but that would be way too slow to use it as serious host, maybe for small slot testing. The raspi's speed is equivalent to a ~300mhz pentium 2.

Also, its an ARM processor, not AMR

Damn, my mistake xD. I suppose that normally samp shouldnt run on ARM. Coming soon SAMP Team will release 0.3X.. so maybe, they do this and we will can run this on ARM.

Problem is, they said it can't run anything windows related at all. So not even emulators have been coded for it as of now.

Well, C still is C on that machine. An ARM still is a turing-cpu that, in theory, can do the same stuff your desktop pc cpu can do. Basically all you need to do is to recompile stuff for its architecture. A compatible compilerset for it is already available longer than the raspberry itself. As an example, I once ran quake 3 on mine (a quite famous game for testing). Its source code is open, and i just recompiled it on the raspi. Took a while, but it actually works and runs at 40fps
Some people even run windows 95 on it in an emulator (just takes some hours to boot), check youtube for examples. There are various open source emulators that already were compiled for the raspi, however i didnt try running a samp server with it, as i never really worked with emulators yet. Could try compiling mta with it for testing, but i dont really like mta and working into it.

Oh ok. I am planning on getting the model B soon. But I don't know how soon I will be getting one. I am just fascinated about what that little machine can actually do.

Please, if you will have a model b, test samp on this platform and tell about it here.

I like to have it also, just for a test server it's perfect! And cheap!

So, i played around a bit with qemu, one of the most famous emulators. Trying to run a tiny x86 linux with it and use that to run a samp server.
By now, the boot process took 90 minutes and is still going. Normally this would take max 30 seconds. Means that emulation is way too slow on the raspi, i even doubt you could get a 1 slot server properly running this way. The only way to get an actually useable server will be compiling the server for that machine. Would be a really nice experiment, but i strongly doubt that the devs will spend time with that.

Why not give it to someone trusted who wants to give it a go? I think it'd be a cool project, but nothing I'd want the official development team working on.

There are many countries in which you can get Internet speeds faster than 100Mbps, though.

He can have a 100mb network at home, but i totally don't believe that he have 100mb upload.
The max at portugal, which we can get from a 100mb network is arround 10mb upload.

I really can't tell about other countries, since i don't live on them.

And by the way, order a vps / game server on a hosting company, really.
You will have a better cpu, more ram.
And the best of all:
you don't need to be worried about power outages, ddos attacks, and server maintenance.
Really, it get's more cheaper than you hosting servers at your home.

Hehe sure, but who should be trusted enough for that? I guess only a handful of people got access to the source, right now maybe even only kye himself, for good reasons, as every new guy is a new potential leaker. Leaked code would split samp into a lot of custom versions and allow new hacks, so it would destroy samp as it is right now. I personally wouldnt give the source for that job to anyone else but the guys ive been working with for all the time, thus the dev team or maybe ex-members. I wouldnt even trust the non-betatester moderators here.

Compile SAMP for Raspberry Pi is a good idea! But plugins for SAMP should be compiled too!

I wouldn't give the source to anyone unknown or even very well know. There would only be a few people I would ever trust with a job like this. Maybe even only Kye himself. I know he has his reasons for not giving people his code just like scripters don't want to give their code to their team members.

This honestly right now, isn't worth the time for the developers to really work on. I think they need to get other things done, maybe even this gets done as a "side/freetime" project.
