Problem windows 8 ?
#1

Little personal project , making a whole new "Start Menu" as application for Windows 8 (which can never be blocked except if microsoft removes the superbar).

I should work on the search function though, at the moment it will only filter the standard folders/files in the start menu directory (no subfolders or other applications). I should also try to let it run on the background and hide/show when opening the tool instead of letting the whole application load on click (too much load time).

Other than that, it runs pretty sweet!

Or maybe not... there are still enough people working on Windows XP who probably cant work with windows 7 already. The new UI is sweet, but it is very very annoying that you even have to ****** "how to shutdown in windows 8" before you can even find something simple as the shutdown button (which is located at "Settings" btw).

This UI is completely new, the fact that they removed the start button makes this OS the most user-unfriendly update so far. Also: the metro works nice and fast for touch devices, but will annoy the heck out of you using a regular pc/mouse, it also requires more time/steps (making it harder to use) to launch a simple application:

Example, i want to launch my e-mail tool:
Windows 7: Win key, "Thund" and i press enter and it will launch thunderbird.
Windows 8: Win key + F (find), enter "Thunderbird" , click "Apps" , click on "Thunderbird" again.

This is one of the many examples why the start menu is faster, just like shutting your pc down as example:
Windows 7: Start -> Shutdown
Windows 8: Keeping your mouse at the right top of the screen, press "Settings", press "Power", press "Shutdown".

More clicks means less userfriendly.

Windows 8 has really good points as well, it has a huge amount of performance increasement. I have to work a lot with xml files which notepad at windows 7 cant even open (im using notepad++ for it). On windows 7 it takes also 20-60 seconds for me to search for an address in a xml file.

Windows 8 opens the file in ~5 seconds in notepad (which freezes already when loading on windows 7), and searching takes less then a second!, Windows 8 has also a very fast boottime and runs greater on slower computers.

It is also loaded with a lot of usefull features like stock antivirus, you can now mount .iso files without needing to install any tools like deamon tools for it! i saw wordpad opening MS WORD files and even more...

From what you have said technically its great but i did not like its style / skin i mean if they made windows 8 similar or look like windows 7 that would be the best

Yup, windows 8 start menu thingy is completely retarded. It should be kept for tablets and phones only. How can those retards not understand how shit it is compared to the original..

As much as I like the idea of you making a "work-around" I believe that the support for this initiative from Microsoft should be withdrawn. Clearly this is not just about "making a cross-compatible" OS but it's also the money that is saved by replacing the effort that once was spent developing a desktop UI - into simply not having to develop another UI.

If I had a touch-screen and I was a programmer would that mean I'd switch my mouse as an input device? Do you really think pressing your monitor for a couple hours will be healthy on your arm? I believe you're gonna find out when you notice how slow you actually progress and how annoying it is to keep extending your hand towards the monitor.

I don't support Windows 8 simply because of the UI and I honestly don't care whats "below the GUI". What matters to me is that this WHOLE idea of changing out what we desktop users have gotten so used to(it's proven useful and that's why we like it) should still be updated and integrated into any Windows OS.

For me - if Microsoft does not realize this I will go over to Linux entirely but then again just that's my two cents.

EDIT: Also to Jese - they will withdraw that support in the next OS after Windows 8. They've already mentioned that.
