Why is Wiki down for 24 hours? This is what is says on every page

"For over a decade, we have spent millions of hours building the largest encyclopedia in human history. Right now, the U.S. Congress is considering legislation that could fatally damage the free and open Internet. For 24 hours, to raise awareness, we are blacking out Wikipedia."

Although the site is down only for 24 hours, I'm curious to know why...

It's called SOPA.

It is due to SOPA. Good for me, I can view it since I am not in the US.

I can view Wiki pages in English and in my labguage's wiki :P

Only the english Wikipedia is blackened. All other languages only have a header linking to the action.

Actually it is supposed to be the whole english version, it is blocked in the UK too. But if you click learn more it tells you how to get around it and view wikipedia anyway.

It's not about 'viewing' wiki, Its to protest against those Bills....

There is no selfishness there, being able to view the English Wikipedia doesn't mean I support SOPA. I even blackened (as you call it) my server's website.
