How to make transparent backgrounds? (Photoshop)

Hey, i don't know how to make transparent backgrounds i photoshop.. I know, but when i set the image in my sig, then it shows a white background. Should i just make the background invisible?

there are only specific image formats which support transparecy,
others just make the transparent parts white


Most common are:
gif and png


gif = less of the size,bad for transition or high resolutioned stuff, only up to 256 colors
png = bigger,more detailed, much more colors(about 16-17million)

Use magic wand, select the background and hit delete and it should become transparent.

Start with a background which opacity is set to 0%.

I did that, but it was still being white.. Should i try to safe in a png format? I always save it as JPG..

If thats a background double click on it and make it a layer,then set opacity to 0 / cut around your picture

Do what he said save it in gif or png then see . Read all your replies properly they all have answers in them.
