Okay, I'm well aware this is a touchy subject. But I wanted to ask it anyway. I remember back about 1-2 years ago there were some servers going around saying Kye and the dev team either didn't want to allow mods, or were discussing a way to prevent mod usage.

What, currently, is SAMP's position on mods, do they acknowledge they exist, or do they flat out tell people not to use them and don't offer support to mod users? I remember, again, servers refusing to deal with anything related to mods or even pics with mods in them.

Was that all a load of hot air or did anything ever actually come of that? The way I see it, let's assume for a second that the devs want to prevent mod usage (perfectly fair IMO and something I'd support), it'd be tricky to implement. I have both a CD copy that I installed, and a Steam copy on two computers in my hosue. If I install a mod on the Steam version, most of the time it detects the file's been changed, and redownloads the correct file.

Would such an idea work on SAMP? I'm gonna guess no, as it'd take up way, way too much bandwith and be unworkable.

You want SA-MP to use the same 'redownload the correct file' system?
San Andreas Multiplayer is not legally endorsed by Rockstar Games. They are not allowed to redistribute files from their games.

Mods were always allowed, but NOT SUPPORTED: SA:MP crash and you have mods = your problem, if they were disallowed, it would kill many servers (like mine)

SA-MP is a mod. SA-MP is software that allows you to play GTA San Andreas as a multiplayer game. Whether or not you use other mods in San Andreas isn't for us to say, it's up to the owners the of the server whether they allow it.

We don't allow people to discuss cheats on this forum. The forum, website, server lists (services that we run) are really seperate from the client and server software. People like to think of it as one package, but it's not. You don't have to use any of the services on this website to play SA-MP.

We have decided against allowing servers to send clients files for several reasons. One main reason is that it's much harder to ensure client security. I feel reasonably safe connecting to any SA-MP server. I would not feel that way if the server was able to install textures, scripts, models in to my game. The original game was designed only for single player, and it does very little in the way of security checking on custom files. This is a difficult thing for non-programmers to understand. Another reason why we don't allow custom files to be installed is because we really want this mod to be San Andreas Multiplayer and nothing else. SA-MP is not really a framework to create your own game.

Rockstar Games is the developer of GTA: San Andreas. The publisher/distributor, and owner of the trademarks, is Take-Two Interactive Software. The license that we all have to use GTA:SA comes from Take-Two. The license agreement can be found on the DVD and in the back of the user manual. If you didn't buy the game on the DVD I encourage you to do so, since this is the only legal way to use SA-MP. SA-MP is acceptable under the category of Modifications found in the GTA:SA PC End User License Agreement.

What I was looking for Kalcor, thank you. I had it in my mind that you devs had some mods that we were absolutely forbidden to mention (I come from the NR2003 community where just mentioning a mod gets an insta-ban from some sites) period.

As somebody who dabbles in code I can see exactly why they didn't put a lot of SP security in at the time of release.

Now for the other bit of my Q. Is it actually possible to prevent custom files being installed or not? And if it is in theory would it actually be worth it? Personally I'd rather have a way to ensure a clean SA install than one with (say) 40 mods on it.

How do you expect SA-MP to tell when the files have been modified when SA-MP itself is a modification? Visual modifications are fine afaik, I see no reason why they wouldn't be allowed.

Edit: Just noticed Kye has already replied and thread date.
