I prefer VMWare Workstation. Download a CD image for a distribution of your choice (e.g. Debian: http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/...86-netinst.iso). When setting up the VM choose the ISO file. Click next a couple of times until the VM starts. Then it's just a matter of pressing enter lots of times and entering some details. One key step, however, is the "software selection" screen. Make sure to uncheck "desktop environment" and to check "SSH server" (use arrow keys to navigate and spacebar to select/deselect options). Also on the screen "write changes to disk" you must press Tab to move the selection from "No" to "Yes". |
