Not entirely sure how to help here.
You did mention old installation directories and/or your registry? If something in your registry is messed up regarding GTA SA I would uninstall and then reinstall the game. It may help if we had more details about your operating system and PC hardware/specs.
Also, are you running a cracked version of GTA SA or Legal? I think more information is needed before people can figure out what help you really need.
