I wouldn't personally use text-to-speech. When I very first started making videos I did contemplate it, as I was younger and felt my youngish voice wouldn't do the video justice.
But text-to-speech sounds so dull, dry and fake. It's honestly better to use your voice. Try adding a little bass to it in audacity If you are really worried, or ask a friend who's maybe got a different accent/voice or is a little more confident.

Your Dxtory setup is exactly what I'd recommend, so nothing wrong there. A bit of advise with cam-hack. Try to be smooth with your shots, and try to have realistic ones too. Following a car? Put the camera on the bonnet, on the side looking down at the window, be creative with it, it's quite a powerful tool If you know how to work it well.
In regards to Vegas, I personally use AE but I did use Vegas a long time ago. If I were you, I'd treat the editing as 'less is more'. Rather than over-editing it, try and simplify it. Use clean looking fonts with basic colours. If you look anywhere nowadays, the 'clean' look is what everyone seems to go for.

Maybe I'm over-thinking it but just try and do something new, don't do what everyones done before.
Good luck, make sure to let us know how you go.
