Do you have Windows 2000? Because what you're saying is not possible and is terribly wrong.

Plus I've had a similar problem with my HP laptop; I did go to Device Manager > Network Adapters > Wi-Fi adapter >right click and go on properties then to Power Management and deselect the "Allow the computer to turn of this device to save power".
