VPS's are only good if you have knowledge of the linux OS and how to fix issues. However if you don't study up beforehand, there isn't really any support that you will get if your server randomly crashes and you're sharing resources with tonnes of other people so it may be quite slow. You may want to keep in mind the size of your server and the resources that it uses up as well. You can also host your site + MySQL on the same server as well with a VPS.

Bottom line: It's probably not worth the hassle if you don't know what you're doing.
