Had the problem before. Make sure there aren't spaces in between ' pass: " " ' ( as stated above ), also make another user or try '127.0.0.1' as the user because root never works for me, Also if you are using MySQL externally don't use the 127 or root, Make a new user and give it privileges for the specific DB you a trying to connect to.
