It could be many reasons:
-Overheating --> Loss of airflow due to dust, fans that died, or new placement of the system where it doesnt get as much air
-Hard Drive Failiure --> Your HDD could be on it's way out, this would slow down the system and shut it off if it loses power/signal
-RAM Failiure --> Your RAM Dimm could have gone bad, or the slot on the motherboard may have gone bad, this would lower system RAM, which would significantly slow it down if you dont have alot to start with. If you do use all of your RAM, the comp will get very slow, and might even turn off to clear RAM.
-Virus --> You could have one that uses lots of resources and is scripted to shut off your computer every how often
