Well, modems don't need port forwarding! Port forwards allow a router to pass a Public IP to a Nat or Private IP behind them, with a modem you computer should get a Public IP directly making port forwarding unnecessary. With dialup modems there isn't much needed to work.
As a footnote many games and other items that call for port forwarding won't work effectively unless a broadband line is used - thus the need for a router and port forwards.
