A little confusing, heh. Well, I think the picked up weapon just goes to your inventory and, if you pick up the same weapon you're using, it will "reload" your weapon. Also, if you try to pick up a weapon class that already exists in you inventory, you'll hear a sound and will have to press TAB to pick it up and replace the old weapon of the same class.
