I use 3ds max primarily for 3D, I've tried others but always go back to 3ds max as I find it's the most easy and straight forward one to use, maya is geared towards simple but if you're into modelling then it's just a pain to use.
If you're looking at doing animation then I suggest against using a game engine, as they are separate directions.
If you're determined to learn then good luck, it took me several years to get decent at just modelling but I'd say it was totally worth it.
There are multiple directions to go into 3D as well, there's modelling, UV Unwrapping, texturing, rigging, animating, rendering, and if you want to learn more then you can look into film lighting, camera angles ect.
