I presume you are contradicting yourself by saying "Say something "usefull" or don't say at all"", when you aren't saying anything yourself.

Anyways, try to imagine the character, close your eyes, take a short nap, while imagining YOU ARE the character (Also known as first-person), and how the character would react to this or that hardship. Once you have a couple of good paragraphs, writing entries will be a cakewalk, such as:

Unknown day during Late Summer, 1854

Dear Diary,
I don’t even know what day it is today. I would say the scariest thing today was when Sims almost found us lying in the pile of hay, I felt like I was going to die if he caught us, but "Lady Luck" was on our side, he decided not to search it. Well, I just wish that Mr. Ross is fine, after being put in jail in Columbus, Mississippi. Like usual, Lester is being a bit hostile, but I like him like that. He is virtually the only one that can protect us against Sims and his fellow slave catchers. Liza has been lagging behind a tad bit, but I can't blame her. A life-long time of abuse can put a heavy toll on your health. I've encouraged her to keep going, but her will is sagging noticeably. Hope we get get past the Ohio before tomorrow, and we should be home free... I hope.

(^ Rushed it, much worst than what I usually type up when I have time. )
