Why wouldn't it be? If your CPU supports 64 bit's then yes you can, however I had lots of trouble installing ubuntu on my machine, after I figured it all out, it worked like a charm (there are known issues with older machines, and just some hardware in general, look it up on ******). I would recommend you to download the live CD, burn and run it, you can test it out without installing it, if you're happy with it, and it all works, you simply click the install button, and there you go.
