Urm it's been a very long time since i used it but i seem to remember having to set up a username and password for the database.

I have not even created a database, I only managed to login on MS-DOS via

C:\mysql root -u pass
Or something simular to that.

EDIT: my error was

#1045 - Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)
