phpBB vs MyBB vs SMF
#1

Okay, so I've been working on a server for a couple of months now and I've finally finished a large chunk of it. I'm thinking of starting a forum so all the beta testers can get a discussion going without needing to be in my ******** group.

I've used phpBB, MyBB and SMF and I've been (semi) full-access admin to forums that have used them.

Now, here's my question. Which of the three (and the three only) do you guys think is the best admin-wise, user-wise and mod-friendly(-wise? LOL). Please vote on the poll and if you can, discuss why you voted for it. I won't be voting though.

I'd love to know what you guys think, because I honestly can't decide.

I prefer SMF. Simple, lots of mods, good anti-spam.

Why not just a skype group or irc channel?

Not everyone has Skype and not everyone knows how to work with irc. Everybody does have a browser so that seems to point at a web-based discussion interface. :P

phpBB obviously. Newest version (3.1, released last week) is seriously top shit. New extensions (replacement for MODs) depending on new events system are dope. You don't need to make any changes in any files, so it's pretty impossible to mess up your forum whatever you do.

It now also includes notifications system (like some paid boards do) which is also a big plus. And buttons in styles are now made in css not with imaeges (meaning that you can install any language and have buttons localized without making new images for each language yourself).
I haven't actually tried the newest version. Do the mods automatically install themselves like SMF or nah?

Not in my experience. I had to install various anti-spam mods (like Bad Behavior) on my boards to prevent bots from signing up and posting spam. Changing captchas didn't make a difference IIRC, but then YMMV.

SMF mods replace / edit existing code and or adds new code.

My preference for forum software.
IPB > MyBB > SMF > phpBB > Expensive/Overrated/Your server won't be as popular as NGG Bulletin.
For free I would go MyBB but be warned most free themes for it suck ass (IMO) so you would be better off making your own or having someone make you one.

There are a LOT of good themes for 1.8, but I'm pretty sure you're referring to the old 1.6 series. Well, it's not really old, but if you're gonna use MyBB, use 1.8.

Just install Stop Forum Spam and make sure email activation is set to on. It even stops most real human spammers, I don't even need to use captcha to stop them
