You get Alienware cheaper than Macbooks.

My IRL friend has a Alienware M17x and its really awesome. It just overheats really easily without a fan.

You would be better off getting a medium level Linux or Windows PC. IMO Macs are only good for doing heavy multimedia, not chatting and gaming.

I switched from Windows to Mac about a year ago. I haven't had to install 200 updates, get rid of viruses, wait for updates to apply almost every time I start it, etc. etc.
I've installed Windows 7, though, because I want to play games with top performance. So I can boot into Windows 7 or OS X, optionally start Windows 7 from within OS X.
Yeah, Macs are expensive. You pay for high-quality, pleasing aesthetics, and good hardware. Just like buying a $100 shirt instead of a $30 shirt, you know where that extra money went.
A Mac would be perfect in your case. All you ever have to do is open/close the lid when using it, and install an update once a month or so.
