You're probably losing connection, and since you lost connection your old instance is still registered as if your in the game. It could be your internet.

It's almost like the "You are banned from this server" bug. You get a timeout but the server didn't notice it yet, so your name is already in use. You should try to fix your internet connection if the server itself isn't the problem.

I've tried more than 5 different nicks, I've rebooted the internet router and still the problem persists

The nickname doesn't matter, it's your internet connection that causes that problem. Do other players also having the same problem on that server or do you have that problem also on other servers?

Using Ethernet or WiFi? Use an Ethernet cable directly to the modem if you can to rule out problems with the local infrastructure.

Well at first make sure that you are only using the following in your name:
Characters: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUFVXYZabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwx yx.
Numbers: 1234567890.
Others: ._$[]().
In case of a roleplay server connect with Firstname_Lastname.
If none of these works, it can also reject you for the following reasons:
-Someone in game is already using your nickname.
-You've been crashed in the past 5 minutes and the server didn't notice that you did yet.
Resolve one: change your name to something else.
Resolve two: wait 15 to 20 minutes and try to connect again.
Notice: Some servers won't accept the following characters either: ._$[]().

the right question is.. Is this happen in all servers or only one server?
if its only one server then you should contact their forums.
if its all servers try what Quantella said ^^ or reinstall your samp / delete gta_set at documents (work everytime
)
