I believe it's a personal choice. Some love windows XP, some windows 7. Obviously newer versions of windows have more features. Also I don't see nothing wrong with windows 8, as long as you get used to it, it's the same as using windows 7, at least for me.

I tried to use 8 and 8.1, but I didn't love Metro.

Look I've been using Windows 7 since 2011/2012 and after getting used to Windows 10 I enjoy it alot more.

Window 7 and XP were the best Windows OS's I've ever used since it gives you the environment where programming and such is more comfortable. Linux is better overall tho.
