VPS Inquiry.
#1

The reason why I create this thread in the first place is because I couldn't find any other thread which completely explains what I want to know. Firstly, yes I do know what a VPS is. At first I didn't. I ******d it, read it on the wiki. I understand what it is but what does it do for SA-MP servers? Like do you run a server 24/7 or something? If that is so, what's the difference with just buying an internet tab from a host? I also tried to create my own VPS today and it had like configure options like Hostname: (Eg. Server1.(yourdomain).com) like what do you do there and what does it have to do with SA-MP?

I'm sorry, if I sound like a caveman, but I honestly have no idea what VPS does for SA-MP. I know about Internet tabs, hosted tabs but VPS, nada. I thought its better to get it of my chest once and for all. Please don't post if you don't have any useful information. A nice explanation of how the VPS works and how it works/connects with SA-MP would be wonderful. Thanks, in advance for those who took their time to reply and give me the information that I desperately seek to inquire.

If you don't know what it is, don't bother with it and just buy slots from a shared host. Some people like to use a VPS or dedi because it provides total freedom. In a shared host you are locked in a box. You have a SA-MP server with a fixed amount of slots, a fixed IP, a fixed port and a simple control panel. That's it. A VPS or dedi has no such restrictions and it's basically just a Linux installation that you can configure to your needs.

Thanks. Ok, by the part you say VPS has no restrictions, it means they can change their IP and all that? Like what kind of freedom do they have?

Hi, well in many hosting providers you will have to pay for additional ip's , however you can always use custom DNS for your servers, but it all depends on the hosting provider you have and their restrictions or conditions...

Ok but lets say, If I buy a VPS, you can set up your own custom DNS and all that but is it the same? Like you upload all the files onto it and then you run it and it runs 24/7? How about the slots? Like do you configure it to 50 slots on the server.cfg or something? By increasing players you have to manually advertise using social sites and videos but not through hosted tabs? Please explain how it works with VPS.....

In simple words VPS is a CPU with a net connection that is on 24/7. You can host servers and website on it.
Think of it as your CPU think that u have two folder in ur PC with samp server inside but they both have different port inside server.cfg so now u can host two server on ur PC with same ip but different port, similarly you can host multiple servers and website simultaneously from single vps but to host so much things you must get a vps with high specs.
The server which i play is hosted on vps and that vps hosts 3 website and 2 servers without any prob.
You can host ur server forum on it too.
Hosting UCP website of server and server on same VPS makes UCP communication faster.
Configuring VPS can be tricky, use ****** to see how to configure it if u get stuck cuz this is no VPS forum.
I recommend DigitalOceans VPS

I think you're asking at the wrong forums I'd go to webhostingtalk the best place to get answers about how a VPS works.

Anyways what do you need a custom DNS for? because that doesn't relate to SA-MP servers at all unless you want like a name.example.com which forwards the IP towards your server.

A VPS is a virtual private server meaning it is not a REAL full box server it's a server in a server so virtual. It's pretty much like a dedicated server but as stated it's in a already existing server so normally you are limited on resources and the network port is shared with others meaning you could end up being on a server with a 1Gbits port but it's being choked to where you're lucky to get 10mbps so that's the crappy news about it, the good news is it's cheaper because it's not a actual boxed server and since the resources are shared among others its cheaper for the provider to offer it instead of a full boxed server which takes up more space in their racks and a network port and more.

A VPS normally is ran 24/7 long as it's located in a datacenter, normally a company will provide their uptime guarantee such as 99.9% etc which means it's pretty much on 99.9% of the time so 24/7 pretty much.

So this means that the server wont go offline unless like their whole grid goes offline along with their network and nomally a datacenter has extra power and networks to avoid that issue or if a firewall problem happens etc.

A VPS can host a SA-MP server and plenty of them but all depends on how well your resources can handle it, you can get it on the internet list simply by editing the server.cfg and adding announce 1 and you can edit the slots to whatever you prefer them to be. There is many advances but the disadvantage of using a VPS or dedicated server is lack of knowledge if you don't know what you're doing you can easily leave your server attack able or breach able which could result in a loss of data or server used for illegal activity which could end up being put against you.

In that case I take my recommendation back.
Haven't tried much VPS service as I don't host things much, you seem to have pretty much experience in it, I would be glad to know your recommendation on both free as well as paid VPS, in case I need to use VPS again in future.
