Recently i have decided to switch from SMF to phpBB, thinking that i would stop getting bot signups. I was getting bout 30 bot signups per day on SMF, and now i've already got 78 bot signups on phpBB.

It seems with whatever forum solution i choose, i cannot find a good way to remove the bots. I have tried using mods to deal with them, and i just cant find a solution.

anyone else having the same problems? Any good mods/solutions?

You're using a captcha in the register page?

Yes, i have tried every forum setting + every mod i can find.

Both SMF and PhpBB are pretty good for forum software. I use Mybb which is a free, powerful forum software. I get no spammers at all. i turn the option to random password - Which sends newly registered people a randomly generated password; and for extra security I downloaded a mod which checks and prevents these bots. Not to mention it's much easier to install mods on mybb.

What's bot? I haven't seen one after I added security questions on forum, bots (and retards), won't handle eg.:
And similar - 3rd grade math with multiplying by 0 or simple logic will stop 99% of bots (and people who can't use order of operations)

make a security question with maths, some hard one.

Make admin-approval for registrations. Eventually switch to vBulletin which is like ~$200.

Did you try Puzzle Captcha?

You serious? One of my friends had vBulletin, and he was getting massive spam. And bots continued on registering, even though he added mods, now he switched to IPBoard. SMF/phpBB/MyBB are good forum softwares, you can stick with them. My point is, no matter what software you use you will still get spam bots.

Try adding that captcha, where you have to assemble an image(I think it was a watch?), not sure how its called though. And, after adding that you can always make some math questions, like DiDok suggested.

I've switched to a V-Bulletin forum and I'm getting constant bots signing up! I've tried email verification and recaptcha...

Set the permissions for Newly Registered Users

Newly Registered Users Group - phpBB 3.0.6 also sees the introduction of the "Newly Registered Users" group. This feature, which may be enabled via the User Registration Settings page of the ACP, allows the administrator to define a minimum post count; if a user is below this limit they will be a member of the Newly Registered Users group. Permissions may be set on this group much like any other group -- an example use is to place the Newly Registered Users group on the moderation queue for all forums. The user is automatically removed from the group when they reach the defined post amount. Be aware that this feature is not retroactive -- users who registered prior to a board's upgrade to phpBB 3.0.5 will not be placed in the Newly Registered Users group, regardless of their post count.

Try it

Just use SMF, and enable the built in security questions. Add at least 5 questions with stuff like "What color is the sky", "What is the world's top religion".

Something people have to look up, nothing maths based...

Also put people with less than 5 posts in a separate group, and manually approve their posts if that's possible

I think a bot can learn what color is the sky no? if you change the question daily is ok

Blocks 99% of bots. I have no captcha or silly question, just email verification and I extremely rarely have to worry about a bot.

I have tried adding some security questions. i will see how this works. (questions only a sa-mp player would know)
