Hardware
#1

Hello,

Although I trust on my own knowledge, I still need help from someone who knows what he/she is talking about when it comes to computer hardware.

I'm planning to build a very simple and cheap computer for some local network file sharing, so it does not need to be a good computer.

I selected the following parts: http://azerty.nl/winkelmandje/winkel...%5B340426%5D=1

I'm worried about some small but important things, such as RAM speed which may or may not be compatible with the motherboard I choose. But that's just an example, there are loads of those little things you need to think about.

So, that's pretty much my question. If somebody can look for me at those little but important things. Also, I would like to know if that crappy integrated power supply (400 watt) is enough power for all the parts. AND also, if those parts all fit in that cheepy computer case.

Thanks,

E.

In short, ram speed doesnt matter, as long as its the same type (ddr2/3). But faster ram often is more expensive, you could save some money by buying slower ram. And 400w will be absolutely fine for this set.

However, if you just need it for file sharing, there are things called "network drives", basically hdd's with an integrated server, so you just plug them in and got it running. You would get 500gb for about 100$, so double space for half the money.

Ahh, you mean a Network Attached Storage, NAS device?
True what you are saying, but I'm also planning to do some local FTP, video streaming and maybe a Minecraft server for just me and meh buddyz. Not ideal for a NAS.

But anyway, what you saw, that should all fit together?

Thanks!

Edit: RAM speed DOES matter, because if you have a mobo that can only handle 1600 MHz, and you buy RAM from (for example) 1866 MHz, your scrwed.

Would be better to just buy a Dedicated Server in the long run.

Sure, It'd cost you less, but are you experienced when it comes to handling all that incoming traffic?
Denial attacks?

Hosting companies have (supposedly) more knowledge than you.

Hey,

Not to make myself "the great man", but actually I'm following an IT training at the moment (Plus I'm working on getting my Cisco and Microsoft certificates). (School: ROC MN, Netherlands, if you are interested). I know everything about proxies, firewalls, security, hosting, routing and such. So no worries for me about that

Thanks,

E.

Edit: Btw, I also ran my own small hosting company (Web, SQL and FTP) at my home data center for almost 2 years.
Oh and btw, what I'm planning to buy is just for local. lol.

I work in the IT business. I know what I'm saying aswell. But internet traffic costs will cost alot, plus the hardware itself.

Why don't you get a mini dedi? (cheap VPS that ranges at around 30-50$/m).

Would be more worth it, Trust me.

I know what you mean, Having power over the files hosted will be best, But having a VPS/DS.. Same story.

It will be cheaper to buy a second hand desktop.
