I've never personally experienced this and so, I may not be the best person to answer your question, however, after a quick search these two topics popped up.

Maybe they can shed some light on what's happening. People seem to be mentioning that its some sort of DDOS attack, or even possibly someone botting your server. Take a read through them and see what you can make out.
