Well, I've seen many name change requests on the forum and many times the forum moderators told that this is pretty annoying thing to do(change name for each user)
So I wonder why not make name change available once per a period of time through the user control panel ?

Yes, if the time will be short then it might be even a problem, but what if make it once per half a year or a year ?
So people who have been here over a year can change their name from the (uncomfort) name they chose a year(or more) before and change it to something they find more likable.

This will reduce the number of requests/threads for a name change.

I haven't seen one of those threads for weeks, and heck no this is a terrible idea as there is no ability to show a user's past names by default.

Kalcor has his visitor messages off so I don't think it bothers him and the forum moderators maybe didn't request for it before.

And changing nickname might not bother the forum moderators, but the forum users it does.

Also, showing old nicknames can be implemented easily, there is even a name change plugin that gives a name change per period of time and saves the old nicknames for vBulletin

I think it is not mandatory, in the way that everyone will change its nickname so we will lost who is who.
After it's still an idea, but i think like you, it will not be processed.
