I have a hosted server but i don't know if it Linux or windows and is there a way i can tell the difference between them?

Ask them, most likely though you can easily test this by trying to load the plugins and see which one fails.

Try loading a linux plugin. If it fails, it is windows.

just look at the server core file ? if windows it will be .exe and if linux it will be some .file format in FTP client (filezilla).
