A VPS is not the same as a webhost! And yes, you can host ANY server on a VPS.

Standard FTP webhosts will now allow application modification or startup.
Though if you've got SSH access, or a command line interface then you could make an attempt at it.

Consider getting other hosting, as web-hosting is for website hosting. So for gaming you'd want to look at gameserver hosting.
