Ubuntu

I'm thinking to dual boot W7 + Ubuntu.

Is there anything that i should know before i do it?

Thanks.

Edit: I'm bored of windows. For years I've stuck to windows and never did another thing, I think it's time to change. But my questions/fears are about x64 and drivers.

Linux is useless for anything other than servers.

I was thinking about Ubnutu for awhile. I too have stuck with Windows. My biggest concern is if the bootmenu would allow you to choose between say XP and windows 7. My concern was if you install linux it will just auto-boot linux andnot give you the option to choose.

Ubuntu is an awesome OS and I highly recommend it. As a matter of fact, I code and play samp in Ubuntu. The samp client and GTA:SA run perfectly. I would even dare to say it runs better in Linux then Windows XP.

If you want to dual boot with Windows, I would suggest using a separate hard disk so you don't have to mess with repartitioning your current hard disk. If you have an available partition of sufficient size for an OS, fine. Download the latest Ubuntu install and boot it in your DVD drive. The installer will install grub along with Ubuntu Linux which will allow you to choose the OS you wish to boot at boot time.

@Śtŕأķă - You are obviously ignorant of the capabilities and functionality of Linux. You are right the Linux makes a great server but it also makes a very stable and complete desktop as well.

You can edit the bootloader to boot as many OS you like. If you install Ubuntu Linux, it will find and setup both Window installations. You can configure the bootloader which OS to boot by default. All from the GUI.

Just configure grub in linux, and if the operating systems are installed on different hard drives, press F12(may not be the same key for you), and choose what hard drive you want to boot from

Which application do you use? Wine?

With Wuni i could manage the boot, it's ok. But you can/need to configure grub from what I read on ubuntu forums. Also the posts befores can clarify you.

Now there's my problem, my mouse which is connected by usb is not being detected/working. I tried to search and I did "sudo modprobe usbhid" and also tried to reboot and re-plug. Nothing happens. My concern now is how to get it working? Tomorrow I'm going to install ubuntu in the other hard drive partition, so.. :S

Grub(GRand Unifield Bootloader) is a "boot manager".

Oh yea, sure, GTA:SA runs better on Linux without drivers, shitty fps, and minimal compatibility + crashes. It is the biggest bs I've heard about sa-mp on Linux, that it runs better than it does on XP. Now that is either nonsense, or 1 in a 100k chance.

I am not ignorant at all towards Linux, I just don't approve it as a desktop OS because in fact it is useless unless most of the developers start developing for Linux. I am in no mood ever to use wine, or to try and get one thing working on Linux where it would work on Windows straight away. And don't start about security or stability, you're not running a server, that is less important. While you don't need super security, Windows provides just enough for any user. I'd say Windows is a better choice overall at the moment, and I doubt it'll change in the future anyway. Same for OS X/Mac, they're just a little more use than Linux is tho.

Btw, Ubuntu for Laptop is even more useless, for as many reasons as you can think of.

Ubuntu will dual boot with XP, W7, whatever. It will replace windows bootloader with grub (gnu boot loader).

Its entirely up to you to dual boot it, but why do it when theres no use for one of the OS. :X

I'd say Server 2008 is a WIN in all the cases, use that.
